Partner, Head of Litigation

Dr. Mohamed Shehata is a partner at Matouk Bassiouny & Hennawy and heads the Litigation department at the Dispute & Resolution practice group and heads the firm’s telecommunications & media sector. He is an assistant professor and vice president of the Centre for Criminal Research at Cairo University, Faculty of Law. Formerly a member of Egypt’s Connseil d’Etat and Public Prosecution and served as a member of the Technical Bureau of the Egyptian Supreme Committee for Legislative Reform. With over 18 years specializing in the telecommunications sector and representing clients in other sectors such as: Etisalat Misr, Pfizer, Zoetis, Novartis, Eli Lilly, Danone Nutricia, Nestle, Egyptian Resorts Company, and the Suez Steel Company. Dr. Shehata handled major commercial disputes before Egyptian courts, arbitral tribunals and regulatory bodies including arbitral disputes before ICC and CRCICA.

    • Successful representation of a British international shoe manufacturer and retailer in connection with blocking claims before the local courts exceeding USD 45 million in complex litigation involving procedural and substantive arguments relating to commercial agency/distribution relationships in Egypt.

    • Successful representation of a mobile operator in Egypt in connection with blocking claims before the Egyptian National Telecom Regulatory Authority exceeding USD 35 million involving an alleged dispute concerning an interconnection agreement with the world’s largest mobile operator.
    • Representation of an automotive manufacturer in connection with violations of building industrial facilities without the necessary licenses, namely, handling related criminal charges, negotiating the possibility of legalizing the status of the violating buildings and undertaking the required procedures to facilitate the acquisition of the required approvals for rectifying the legal position of the company.
    • Successful representation of a European glass, tires and electrical parts manufacturers respectively in connection with negotiating an amicable resolution of a considerable industrial labor strike in coordination with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Labor office, the Ministry of Labor and Manpower as well as local law enforcement agencies.
