Counsel

Mohammed Sallam is a Counsel at Matouk Bassiouny & Hennawy and a member of the Dispute Resolution practice group. He holds a dual master’s degree in law and economics from the University of Hamburg and Cairo University. He has been associated with Arbitration practice since 2015. He has over ten years of experience in national and international arbitrations. He is a visiting instructor and speaker on international arbitration related lectures and workshops at the American Bar Association in Egypt, CRCICA, the British University in Egypt. He contributes with the American Bar Association’s initiative “Rule of Law” in Egypt, for training and developing young lawyers. Prior to his joining MB&H, he practiced international arbitration disputes at Hafez law office.

Practice Focus
Mohamed has experience in complex arbitrations in many industries, with an emphasis on telecommunication, construction, oil & gas, shipping & logistics, investment, sports, hospitality and cross-border business transactions disputes under Egyptian, Kuwaiti, and Saudi Laws. He has handled cases under auspices of various rules including ICSID, ICC, CRCICA, DIS, ADCCAC, DIFC, CAS, FIFA’s DRC, and FIFA’s DC. As well as advising clients on arbitration-related court litigations including enforcement and nullification procedures of domestic and international arbitral awards.

  • Representation of a regional telecom operator in connection with a USD 1.1 billion arbitration involving breach of the terms of an interconnection agreement against the world’s largest mobile operator.
  • Representation of a telecom monopoly fixed –line operator in connection with a dispute involving landing rights against the operator of a round-the-globe submarine fiber-optic communication cable.
  • Representation of an Emirati prestigious private equity in connection with a USD 6 million corporate and structuring dispute in the steel industry against Egypt’s largest steel manufacturer.
  • Assisted and advised on mediation and finalized settlement agreements for holding Dutch pipelines manufacturer in connection with a dispute with Egyptian Housing ministry.
  • Representation of a Kuwaiti investor in connection with a USD 20 billion arbitration concerning the ending of a partnership and transfer of shares in multiple major Kuwaiti and international incorporations.
  • Representation of an Egyptian landline telecommunication company in connection with an EGP 2 billion arbitration brought by a subcontractor regarding wireless telecommunication project under Egyptian law.
  • Representation of a global maritime business transporter in connection with a USD 3.5 million dispute concerning maritime shipping disputes.
  • Representation of an Egyptian investor in connection with a dispute regarding breach of a sale of shares agreement to one of the biggest Egyptian banks with respect to a multi-million-dollar transaction.
  • Representation of an online and mobile VAS pioneer in MENA region against a national federation regarding sports online broadcasting rights.
  • Representation of a Libyan investor in connection with breach of a sale agreement with respect to hotels and resorts in Red Sea.
  • Representation a regional telecom operator in connection with a EGP 700 million arbitration involving breach of the terms of an interconnection agreement against the world’s largest mobile operator.
  • Representation of a global green field producer in connection with an EGP 13 million dispute concerning shipping, logistics, and customs clearance.
  • Representation of an international gas company operating in international liquefied natural gas (LNG) in connection with a USD 2.2 billion investment dispute concerning interruption of gas supply.
  • Representation of an Egyptian Football club before the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (“CAS”) in connection with sell-on fees resulting from a football player’s transfer.
  • Representation of a real estate developer against a major Jordanian developer in connection with a USD 7 million dispute regarding a joint venture development project in Red Sea.
  • Representation of a real estate developer in connection with a construction dispute amounts to EGP 120 million concerning the construction of one of the biggest sugar plants in the region.
  • Advised public real estate developer on the termination of more than EGP 100 million sale and usufruct contracts of land plots in Sahl Hashish, Red Sea.
  • Representation of a consortium of leading Egyptian and Emirati real estate developers in connection with a mediation of a construction dispute concerning the civil works of one of the biggest hydrocarbon plants in Egypt.
  • Representation of a real estate developer in connection with a EGP 60 million dispute regarding a major medical development project in Six of October City.
  • Representation of an Egyptian Football club before the FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber and before the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (“CAS”) against a professional Nigerian Player and an Omani Football club regarding contract termination and sell-on fees.
  • Advised numerous international clients and law firms on the enforcement of foreign arbitral awards in Egypt.

  • Co-Author "The Middle Eastern and African Arbitration Review" in Global Arbitration Review (“GAR”). (March 2016, 2017 and 2018).
  • Contributing as a writer with Thomson Reuters and West Law Partnership in their project covering legal systems in the MENA region. I co-wrote about legal system and business laws in Egypt (April 2014- 2016).
